Effective Problem Solving: A Focus On Word-Problem Structures
This full-day session will equip educators with effective strategies to teach word-problem solving in mathematics. We start off by discussing ineffective strategies (i.e., defining word problems by key word or operation). We then discuss the necessity of using an attack strategy that guides student work from beginning (i.e., reading the problem) to the end (i.e., checking work). We dive into the six common word-problem structures (i.e., combine, compare, change, equal groups, comparison, ratios and proportions) that students must understand to solve word problems across the elementary and middle school grades. This session is hands-on and interactive, educators will be solving word problem and teaching word problems! Maximizing Mental Agility
The workshop highlights six facets of human thought that are simultaneously hidden and obvious. Most of us are unaware that these factors control the way that we think, and yet, when we are told about them, we recognize situations where they have affected our thinking. By making these characteristics explicit, we give people more insight into the strengths and weaknesses of their own thinking. We then provide specific techniques based on these insights that they can use to be more effective in the workplace and beyond. **Open to AISD staff only**

In this session, teachers will walk through a sample Google Trek and have the option to create one of their own. A Google Trek uses Google My Maps as the base, with pins on the map representing stops and choices for students. Design Thinking (Fabriscopes)
This PD workshop puts Design Thinking into action. We will teach the process of Empathizing, Defining, Ideating, Prototyping and Testing, citing examples and resources. Starting with the problem of creating instruments that change the way we see the world (we call them "Fabriscopes"), participants will Empathize with users whose vision is impacted by technology in short videos. In the Define stage, we will work on focusing the problem and creating “How might we...?” statements. For Ideate, we will brainstorm and draw, working both independently and in groups. Finally, participants will Prototype and Test by creating proofs of concept, working with tools and materials.

Design with Sun and Water
Green design strategies are not new to the building industry but represent a renewed importance of the relationship between the environment and buildings. As the climate continues to change, design plays a critical role in solving these issues. The earliest architects understood the importance of siting homes to protect from prevailing winds, while welcoming winter sun and cool breezes. These techniques are passive design strategies. We will discuss passive design as well as active techniques such as solar panels. We will also discuss storm water strategies that help reduce flooding and improve the quality of water that enters our aquifers. The goal is to help children see how small changes in design can have large impacts on our world.

Scientists In The Classroom: A Roadmap
Discover how one campus designed and implemented a program that virtually invites scientsists and researchers into the classroom and encourages student participation, public speaking, critical thinking, and curiosity. Research on the program's effectiveness and impact on students will also be presented.

2017-2018 speakers included two former US ambassadors (Russia & South Korea), leading scientists at the Smithsonian, Field,  Natural History Museum, and La Brea Tar Pits.  A wildlife photographer (NPR film on Cheetahs) from Zimbabwe,   One of the members of the NASA Mars Mission study conducted on a Hawiian volcano for 366 days.  The top female astronaut (Peggy Whitson).  The United Nations was one of the final speakers.

A total of 51 noted speakers (31 female, 20 male) spoke to the McMath Middle School students  over the course of the year.  Next year will include at least one Nobel Leaurate as well as the Head of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.  Virtually all speakers have volunteered to participate again next year.

All talks were really a Q&A with the students interacting with the speakers.  These were not lectures but engagements with the students.  About 150 career choices were addressed over the course of the year.   The sessions are held during the student's lunch period so no extra demands are put on the school administration.

Cost to the school system:  $0

Word Problems? No Problem!
Over the last 3 years, we have worked in 3rd-grade classrooms in AISD to investigate effective ways to teach word-problem solving to students. We will present our strategies for teaching word-problem solving effectively. Specifically, we will: (a) Help teachers understand why using key words or defining word problems by operation is not helpful to students, (b) Introduce different attack strategies (e.g., UPSCheck, CUBES) that are necessary in order for students to organize word-problem work, and (c) Explain how defining word problems by structure (e.g., combine, compare, change) is important. The intended audience is teachers who teach math to students in grades 1-4.

This session will show teachers, of any content, how they can use videos to introduce, teach, or review a lesson and assess what the student knows or learned from the video. It also differentiates the speed at which students receive the information and reply to questions asked. During the session teachers will view a video that I used in class, participate in a short video themselves, and then create one that they could use in their classes.

Exploring The Role Of Water In Shaping The Surface Of Mars
This session will summarize past and ongoing research to understand how liquid water shaped the surface of Mars >3.5 billion years ago. During this time period, there is significant evidence for flowing liquid water that carved large river valleys and formed lakes, some of which might have been the size of small seas or oceans on Earth. Following this ~45 minute talk, I will demonstrate the use of Google Mars for exploring the surface features of Mars using multiple data sets freely available to the public. Finally, for the last ~1 hour of the 2.25 hour session, I will plan to have an open dialogue with interested participants on how this material and use of Google Mars might be best incorporated into classroom exercises at all levels.

Nick Dellas is back with his tour de force workshop, Tech Tools for Tomorrow and the Next Day. In this high-energy, lightning round, rollercoaster workshop, Nick will present a plethora of digital tools and resources that are easy to implement and help to create a highly engaging and interactive learning experience for you and your students. Once you have returned your seat backs and table trays to their full upright and locked positions, Nick will be happy to answer your questions. (Please note that Nick did not write this description…he is far too humble).

Google Trek: An Adventure Full Of Student Choice
Do you remember the "choose your own adventure" stories? A Google Trek is a way to design a self-paced module for students to work through that provides choice in learning, just like the stories. This curriculum format was designed around a 7th grade science classroom, but can be adapted to any grade level (upper elementary - high school). In this session, teachers will walk through a sample Google Trek and have the option to create one of their own. A Google Trek uses Google My Maps as the base, with pins on the map representing stops and choices for students. This session will also include a discussion as to how this design can be implemented in BLEND. Please bring a laptop to work on, not a tablet.

Closing Keynote: The Geography of Identity — Exploring Intersectionality
If we are to work towards increasing equity and inclusion, we need to understand how our own and others’ identities impact our experiences in the world.  Using personal story telling and an original model called the Geography of Identity, Liesl Chatman explores how aspects of our identity change over time and place, and how each of us has our own unique identity that we can describe through our own stories of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, dis/ability, spiritual beliefs, age, language, and more.
