Effective Problem Solving: A Focus On Word-Problem Structures
This full-day session will equip educators with effective strategies to teach word-problem solving in mathematics. We start off by discussing ineffective strategies (i.e., defining word problems by key word or operation). We then discuss the necessity of using an attack strategy that guides student work from beginning (i.e., reading the problem) to the end (i.e., checking work). We dive into the six common word-problem structures (i.e., combine, compare, change, equal groups, comparison, ratios and proportions) that students must understand to solve word problems across the elementary and middle school grades. This session is hands-on and interactive, educators will be solving word problem and teaching word problems! The Math Behind Building in Cities
Cities are created by both private and public developers. During the process of land development, these agencies spend time carefully analyzing what type of development is possible due to zoning codes as well as the cost of the development. This process of analysis is dependent upon a financial document called a proforma. This session will walk attendees through creating a proforma via a case study. We will be able to see how slight changes to costs or areas can have dramatic impacts on the development of a project. The goal of this session is to show real world examples of how math and geometry play a large role in how the world around us gets shaped. Basic excel spreadsheets and case studies will be provided for use with students.

Interactive Word Walls: Speaking And Writing About Math And Science.
Reading, interpreting, and producing domain-specific text are fundamental practices of math and science. Interactive word walls help develop students’ ability to read and produce the genres of texts that are intrinsic to math and science K-5. They resemble graphic organizers, strategically target academic vocabulary, and are student generated. Interactive word walls support the development of critical thinking, build academic vocabulary, and reinforce important patterns while providing an overview of each lesson and unit. The presentation will include direct instruction and small group work. Digital access to grade level content TEKS and AISD scope and sequence is suggested.

Word Problems? No Problem!
Over the last 3 years, we have worked in 3rd-grade classrooms in AISD to investigate effective ways to teach word-problem solving to students. We will present our strategies for teaching word-problem solving effectively. Specifically, we will: (a) Help teachers understand why using key words or defining word problems by operation is not helpful to students, (b) Introduce different attack strategies (e.g., UPSCheck, CUBES) that are necessary in order for students to organize word-problem work, and (c) Explain how defining word problems by structure (e.g., combine, compare, change) is important. The intended audience is teachers who teach math to students in grades 1-4.

This workshop is for third through fifth grade teachers who wish to have their students engage in an engineering challenge. The students will go through the steps of defining a problem, developing possible solutions and then testing various solution design to compare how well the designs solve the problem. The teacher and students will discuss and research where our drinking water comes from, how water is polluted and how it cleaned for human use. The students will about the negative effects that human can have on water quality and how a filtration system can remove or lessen the negative effects. In this challenge, the students will use commonly available material to design a water filtration system to remove pollutants in the water.

Edpuzzle - How To Assess Your Lectures
This session will show teachers, of any content, how they can use videos to introduce, teach, or review a lesson and assess what the student knows or learned from the video. This is an alternative to giving formal lectures and calling on students at random to answer questions. This approach can make direct teach or review lessons more engaging and relevant for students. It also differentiates the speed at which students receive the information and reply to questions asked. During the session teachers will view a video that I used in class, participate in a short video themselves, and then create one that they could use in their classes.
