Opening Keynote: An Introduction to Equity Literacy for Math and Science Educators
Despite the popular notion that math and science classrooms are culture-free and safe from the sorts of biases and inequities that crop up in other subject areas, a closer look reveals a variety of equity concerns to which math and science educators should attend. In this workshop, based on the equity literacy framework (strengthening educators’ literacy related to equity), we will explore those concerns, including matters of curriculum, pedagogy, student engagement, and classroom climate.

When students have a growth mindset, they are willing to face challenges and problem solve to do quality mathematics. Creating a classroom environment that fosters a growth mindset is essential. Giving students low floor - high ceiling problems gives all learners a chance to contribute, think deeply, problem solve, succeed and exceed! In this session, we hope to model a few of these type of problems for secondary math classrooms and brainstorm problems you can try in your class.

Friday Math Challenges
We will explore the many rewards students and teachers receive from Friday Challenges. These challenges offer students a way to collaborate, problem solve, use critical thinking and think about problems in ways they never thought about before. It is a fun way to engage students in math and problem solving, and allow them to see problem solving as more than just numbers on paper. During this session we will use Growth Mindset to show students that somethings that seem impossible at first, are actually attainable. This session will explore 5 different challenges that students are excited to go home and share with parents. There is no technology required for this session, just bring your creative thinking skills and be prepared to be stumped!
