As Austin ISD Sustainability Manager, Darien supports AISD’s vision to enhance sustainability programs that decrease costs while conserving the environment and being responsive to the dynamic local community. As such, she implements programs and tracks performance in water and energy conservation, alternative transportation, recycling and composting, access to nature, green building, and school engagement.

Prior to joining Austin ISD, Darien advanced sustainability at Austin Community College, and she also draws upon her ten years of experience in international development, managing programs in the Dominican Republic for Columbia University’s Center for Environment, Economy and Society. While there, she implemented community-based programs to promote community and economic development through environmental preservation and resource management. Initiatives included water quality and access programs; creating a kayaking and birding ecotourism program; establishing a coral reef monitoring system; and advising local and national policymakers in sustainable community development, coastal management, and marine conservation.

Darien earned a Master of Public Health degree in behavioral science and global health from the University of Texas, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Southwestern University.
